Knitting Pattern: Painted Wall Shawl - Slip Stitch Mosaic Knitting, Shawl Knitting

$9.00
The Painted Wall Shawl
The shawl is intended as a metaphorical and physical representation of the deep, steep and narrow Painted Wall, while paying homage to Black Canyon of the Gunnison NP in Colorado. Each of the unique slipped + mosaic stitch patterns is knitted together to create a shawl that celebrates this unique geologic landscape.

Construction + Pattern Overview
This oversized, parallelogram (triangles at each end of a rectangle) shaped shawl is worked in one piece from one tip to the other. Throughout the knitting, Icord is worked at the beginning and end of each row to create smooth edging and then bound off (in Icord) at the end. The knitting is organized into sections--marked by unique slipped mosaic stitches-- each section flows directly into the next.

• Worked on circular needles, back + forth
• The pattern is for fingering weight yarn
• Includes measurements for each individual section in case you alter the pattern
• 3 main stitches are used: knit + slips + purls
• Both written and charted instructions are included.
• Icord cast on, as you knit, Icord bind off (instructions are included)

Suggested Yarn + Yardage
Taos (2 skeins) hand dyed fingering sock yarn 75/25 superwash Corriedale/nylon 4 oz. 434 yds (397 m)
• 1 skein in boots n bolos
• 1 skein in boots n lace
Sandia (2 skeins) hand dyed fine fingering sock weight 80/20 SW Merino/Nylon 4 oz/434 yds (397 m)
• 1 skein in boots n bolos
• 1 skein in boots n lace
Approx Total Yardage: 1736 yds (1587 m); 4 skeins total

IMPORTANT:
This project was designed to use all of the yarn. Please note that if you are not achieving gauge you may need more (or less) yarn than is suggested above.

To further enhance the textural effect of the knitting, I used 1 skein of taos in one color alternating it with 1 skein of the sandia in the other color for half of the shawl. Then, when those ran out, I substituted in the 2nd set of skeins and continued on. You do NOT need to use two different types of fingering weight yarn—this is just a subtle detail that I incorporated into my own knitting of the pattern.

Colors are flip flopped after the main rectangle is worked to balance out the yardage used for both colors.

Size Before Blocking + Direction of Knitting
The Painted Wall Section: 35 in (89 cm) x 23 in (58 cm), The North + South Rim Sections (each): 23 in (58 cm) x 27 in (69 cm) x 30 in (76 cm). Please note: The shape in the schematic indicates The Painted Wall section is a square. It is actually a long rectangle (as the measurements indicate).

Knitting Direction: Cast on is with a very small amount of sts that steadily increase by 1 st every rs row. The main body rectangle shape of the shawl is knitted back and forth with no inc or dec. Then, to create the second triangle, 1 st is dec at the beginning of every rs row until there are 11 sts remaining for bind off.

Needles + Gauge
US Size 5 3.75 mm circular needle for cast on + knitting, using a 24 in (61 cm) cord.
Average Mosaic Gauge (before blocking): 6 sts / in (2.54 cm) + 9.6 rows / in (2.54 cm)
Size needed to obtain gauge. If your number of stitches and rows per in/cm doesn’t match the pattern, the size of your finished product will be different from the pattern! Knit the swatch in one of the stitch patterns and adjust accordingly!
