Inspiration:
For nearly 100 years, New Mexico has attracted photographers from around the world. At least 50 well-known 20th century photographers came to Taos and Santa Fe, including the big three. "New Mexico," Ansel Adams said, is "the most completely beautiful place I have ever seen." {Santa Fe and Taos were his Rome and Paris.} Paul Strand arrived in 1926 and took hundreds of pictures. Soon after, Edward Weston photographed delicate aspens. Many of their photos are among the most splendid ever made, reflecting the romantic and transcendental ideals of the time. They were enchanted by a sky that took a fresh cast of light every few seconds. The vistas they photographed seemed formed at creation and to extend forever.

In the Southwest region you can find distinctive styles, but within each work it may be combination of styles, having evolved through history to become what we associate today with that particular region. The architectural styles in the Southwest are shaped not only by the cultures that lived there, but also the environment around which they had to design. One major player is the Native American groups that had adapted to and taken advantage of the conditions of the environment while integrating their spiritual beliefs and social needs into their tools and furnishings. Southwestern-style work often integrates Native American graphics and designs into ornamentation and architecture. The geometrical architecture of the American southwest lends itself nicely to mosaic knitting. The lines and color offer up an opportunity to explore and experiment with your knitting. Taos was created in the spirit of the architecture and environment in which it stands.
