Knitting Pattern: Allegheny Plateau Cowl - Slip Stitch and Mosaic Knitting

Knitting Pattern: Allegheny Plateau Cowl - Slip Stitch and Mosaic Knitting

$6.00
The Allegheny Plateau is a large dissected plateau area in western and central New York, northern and western Pennsylvania, northern and western West Virginia, and eastern Ohio. The Catskills (The Blue Mountains of the North), lie along the plateau. Here go, the name. The Allegheny Plateau Cowl came about after looking at this huge pile of contrasting colored yarn left over from making The Blue Mountains of the North sweater. I couldn’t bear not to use it as it is incredible yarn. I used the base charts created for the sweater, changed all of the knitting rules and developed the cowl!

Pattern Overview
• This cowl is worked in the round, from one side to the other.
• The cowl is constructed by knitting seven sections (each section works directly into the next).
• The pattern is written for worsted weight yarn. O wool Local very much knits like a heavy worsted, which is why there is a 4.5 st/inch gauge on size US 9 needles.
• Mosaic + slip stitch knitting. Twisted stitches are also used.
• 3 charts are used in the knitting of the pattern. Written + charted directions are included.
Please read over the entire notes + pattern before starting.

Gauge
O-wool Local knits up very much like a heavy worsted yarn so PLEASE make a swatch! It is the most important thing you can do to be successful! Depending on how YOU knit, you may need to utilize different sized needles!

Stitch Gauge:
Measures 18 stitches over 4 in/10 cm using US 9 needle size {4.5 sts/in (cm)}. Please note: gauge reflects the textured slipped stitch and mosaic stitches.

Row Gauge:
Mosaic and Slipped stitch knitting has an effect on row gauge. Above are two pictures from different sections of the sweater. They have IDENTICAL stitch counts (4.5 sts / in (cm)), however the row gauge is VERY DIFFERENT. Why? Because only one color is worked across the row at a time, various stitches from the previous row are slipped according to the pattern, pulling the color from the row below up into the current row.
The row to stitch ratio will not be the same as a true stockinette, but will be tighter due to the drawing in effect of the slipped stitches. Mosaic patterns are more dense than regular stockinette and less pliable and elastic-not as dense as double knitting, but much more dense than regular stockinette fabric.
• Twisted Stitch Hem Section (main color, cast on, hem): 25.6 rows / 4 in (10.2 cm), 6.4 rows / 1 in (cm)
• Twisted Stitch Mountain Section (at the join, main color): 20 rows / 4 in (10.2 cm), 5 rows / 1 in (cm)
• Mosaic Mountains Section (colorwork section, lower body): 29.5 rows / (10.2 cm), 7.4 rows / 1 in (cm)
• Woven Textured Section (main color, upper body + sleeves): 25 rows / 4 in (10.2 cm), 6.25 rows / 1 in (cm)

IMPORTANT: In this sweater, the stitch gauge is essential. The row gauge is secondary in that the pattern is designed in height, for example, knit the woven section for 4 in (10 cm). If you are not meeting the row gauge, use the Adapting the BMOTN to You Worksheet to make adjustments throughout the sweater.
