Knitting Pattern: Hats of the Hudson Valley - 4 Mountain Hats to Knit

Knitting Pattern: Hats of the Hudson Valley - 4 Mountain Hats to Knit
$10.00
The Hats of the Hudson Valley bundle is based directly on the textured, mosaic + slipped stitch patterns created for the Blue Mountains of the North sweater. The only difference is… the hats are worked with slightly different rules + reimagined charts, creating unique textures from what was found in the sweater! There's no boredom in these hats—the stitch patterns stay fresh and will undoubtedly spark your own creativity in developing even more ‘versions’ of the hats as well! (I can’t wait to see yours.) You can knit several hats with your leftover yarn from the BMOTN sweater (I made 5 hats and a cowl)! Or, dive into your personal stash and use your worsted weight leftovers to make hats with.
Pattern Overview
• Each of the hats in this pattern bundle are knit in the round.
• The pattern is written for worsted weight yarn. O wool Local very much knits like a heavy worsted, which is why there is a 4.5 st/in(cm) gauge on size US 8 + 9 needles.
• There are hats that use mosaic + slip stitch knitting. Two of the hats uses twisted stitches.
• Charts are used in the knitting of the patterns. The ability to read charts OR the willingness to LEARN HOW to read charts is a must. However, written directions are also included, as well as schematics.
• Please read over the entire notes + pattern before starting.
• Swatch, swatch, swatch! These are not hats in stockinette. They will work up differently as you knit + purl. Take the time to knit up some swatches with the yarn you are using.
• You may need to alter the size needles to obtain the gauge / to make the size you want. Conversely, you may need to knit one size down/up.

Yardage + Gauge
HAT YARDAGE: Each hat was created using yarn skein leftovers from the Blue Mountains of the North sweater. From 6 skeins of yarn in these colors (River Oat, Ganoga, Cresheim, Bluebell, Wissahickon, Wood Fern), I made 7 hat samples in sizes 4 and 5 (and I still have enough yarn to make one more hat). Each hat will use between 150-250 yds of yarn, depending on the size.
Stitch Gauge:
Measures 18 sts over 4 in/10 cm using US 9 needle size {4.5 sts/in (cm)}. Please note: gauge reflects the textured slipped stitch and mosaic stitches.
Row Gauge:
Mosaic + Sl stitch knitting affects row gauge. Only one color is worked across the row at a time--sts from the previous row are sl according to the pattern, pulling the color from the row below up into the current row. The row to stitch ratio will be tighter than stockinette + is more dense/less elastic, than regular stockinette fabric.
It can be very challenging to figure out gauge for sl st and mosaic knitting sts. That is normal. The following are approximates for the various sections. Just be mindful as you knit, what your approx. row gauge is and adjust the height of your knitting accordingly.
• Hem (main color+cast on+hem): 25.6 rows/4 in (10 cm), 6.4 rows/1 in (cm)
• Twisted Stitch Mountain: 20 rows/4 in (10.2 cm), 5 rows/1 in (cm)
• Mosaic Mountains Section: 29.5 rows / (10.2 cm), 7.4 rows / 1 in (cm)
• Woven Textured Section: 25 rows / 4 in (10.2 cm), 6.25 rows / 1 in (cm)
Finishing + Blocking
Finishing. When you have completed the decreases for the crown, break yarn and leave a 10 in/25.5 cm tail. Thread the tail through the live sts remaining. Pull the sts to close up the top hole. Sew in the ends.
Light Blocking for the hats is critical. A wash and blocking is required to help the decrease lines settle in and lay flat.
Carefully soak your hat(s). Do not agitate. Leave it for about 15 minutes to get it good and soaked. Do not oversoak for colors used that may bleed.
Remove as much of the water as you can out of the hat(s). Press. Do not wring.
Roll the hats in a towel… or, two… or, three.
Use a balloon! Blow it up inside the hat, smooth over your sts using your hands and wait for it to dry!
About Mosaic Knitting…
The term mosaic knitting was coined by Barbara Walker and described in a 1976 book devoted to the technique. While the name is sometimes used more loosely to refer to all slip-stitch patterns, Walker used it to refer to a technique defined by a specific set of rules. What makes mosaic different from most other slip-stitch patterns is that within the constraints of those rules, a designer can create new motifs and repeat patterns and images.
Without Barbara Walker, there is no Mosaic Knitting.
